Why work for Sense?
Sense is a great organisation and we pride ourselves in making a positive difference to the lives of the people we support.
Our employees are vital to us and here are just some of the comments they gave us in response to our latest employee opinion survey, when they were asked – what’s the best thing about working for Sense?
“Working for an organisation that puts people first”
“The variety of the work, the recognition for the work done, knowing that it makes a difference to the lives of deafblind people”
“The team I work with and the level of engagement from senior and middle managers”
“The respect that we all have for each other”
“Sense has excellent training courses to assist staff in working in a person-centred way and there are opportunities to develop individual skills”
“Being trusted and respected”
Here in Sense we are committed to equal opportunities and welcome applications from genuine and talented people from all sections of the community who share Sense’s values.
We have a positive attitude towards disabled people and that commitment is displayed through our Two Ticks symbol. This means that we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum essential criteria for a job vacancy.
What benefits do we offer?
Sense employs a range of people across the UK who work in a variety of roles. So we offer the opportunity to work in a large, diverse and successful charity where people can develop their skills, knowledge and careers in a supportive and flexible environment.
We also offer a good range of employee benefits, these include:
Learning & development
Sense has an exceptional induction, training and eLearning programme for all staff, some of which they can do before they start. We are also proud to offer our leadership development programme, ‘Growing Stronger Leaders Together’, to all our managers. Find out more about our professional development.

A member of staff can receive up to £150 for referring a friend or family member to come and work for Sense.
Recognition and thanks
In addition to local recognition of staff’s achievements, staff and volunteers are able to be nominated for a Sense Award. Shortlisted nominees for each category are invited to the annual Sense Awards gala lunch with the Chair of the Trustees where the winners are announced.

We offer access to personal health advice and support internally and through our occupational health providers website ‘Heath Matters’, as well as occupational sick pay scheme for those suffering from ill health.

A large number of roles within Sense are offered on a part-time basis and where we can, we also offer flexible working arrangements.

On joining Sense you’re entitled to 24 days annual leave plus your usual bank holidays, this rises to 26 days after five years’ service and 28 days after ten years. Also, we offer a scheme to buy and sell annual leave up to a maximum of 4 days.
There’s lots of opportunities to get further involved with Sense across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it doesn’t matter what area of the business you work in. We encourage people to be a ‘Member’ of Sense and get involved in volunteering including Sense Holidays or perhaps take part in one of our many fun fundraising events or arrange fundraising activities themselves.
In addition to the auto-enrolment pension, Sense also offers a contributory pension scheme in which Sense will match your contributions from 1% - 5%. Also, staff can receive free financial advice and information on pension options on request.
Employee opinions matter to us
It’s important to us that we hear what our staff think about working at Sense. We have a Staff Forum which meets with the CEO four times a year to discuss issues relevant to staff. Also, we also we run regular employee opinion surveys (You said – we did) so we can hear how we can make Sense a better place to work. Our dedicated ‘employee voice’ mail box provides another place for staff to post their views.
We offer discounts on mobile phone and tablets with EE and a 10% discount in Sense shops is available to all Sense staff.
We operate a Sense lottery in partnership with Unity which gives staff an opportunity to win a cash prize as well as raise valuable money for Sense.
Please note that the benefits listed above are offered to those employed by Sense, not all of these are accessible by casual workers.
