Work with us

If you’re looking for a rewarding and fulfilling role, where what you do really goes towards supporting people who are deafblind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, you’ve come to the right place.

Skills for care Accolades 2016/17 winnerWhat we’re about

Our vision is to support people who are deafblind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, to enjoy more independent lives. Our expertise in supporting individuals with communication needs benefits people of all ages, as well as their families and carers. We provide information and advice, offer a wide range of flexible services and campaign passionately for the rights of the people we serve.

We have a wide range of opportunities for you to get involved in our work, either through paid employment or volunteering – and our friendly HR and volunteering teams are waiting to hear from you. See our current vacancies for the latest jobs on offer.

How we work

We have adopted working principles to describe our behaviours and expectations - the 'I' statements (see below). These apply to every member of staff, trustees, deafblind people, families, volunteers and our behaviours in relation to colleagues in other agencies.

Along with our values they flow into practice, induction, training, information materials, policies and staff performance.

Working for Sense can be incredibly rewarding, as this video about our Supported Living services shows. Watch the embedded video below or view it on YouTube.

The ‘I’ statements

I will listen to others
By whatever means something is communicated to me: by gesture, facial expression, body tension or posture, sign language, objects of reference, in writing or voice, I actively listen.

I will understand and respond
I try to the best of my ability to understand what is being communicated to me and I always respond in a timely and respectful way.

I will respect others
I respect and treat others as I would wish to be respected and treated myself.

I will be honest and open
I am open about the reasons for my actions and I give my honest opinion knowing that it will be respected.

I will participate and contribute
I participate to the best of my ability and contribute willingly and freely.

I will take informed risk
I consider the benefits of taking a risk as well as what might happen if things go wrong. Where possible I seek to manage risk rather than avoid it.

I will find things to celebrate
I recognise that all achievements, no matter how small they might seem to me, are cause for celebration.

No decision about me, without me
I always seek to involve individuals in coming to decisions that affect them.
